First Aircraft to use the flight deck.

< This Wessex Wirlwind helicopter was the very first aircraft to use the flight deck of HMAS Melbourne.

During flying trials in January 1956 in the English Channel,  Royal Navy Hawker Sea Hawks from HMS Bulwark were used to test arrester wires and catapult. >

09/08/56 Venom lost, crew lost, crashed after takeoff. 28/04/66 Gannet lost, crashed over the side.
24/05/57 Sycamore lost, dropped into the sea. 05/05/67 Wessex ditched and recovered
21/11/57 Sycamore lost, dropped into the sea. 16/06/70 Wessex ditched and recovered
16/06/58 Gannet lost, ditched. 08/11/73 Skyhawk lost, fell off bow when catapult failed.
08/10/59 to 28/03/60 5 Venoms extensively damaged in landings 09/02/75 Tracker lost, crashed into the sea during "Touch and Go"
09/05/60 Gannet lost, ditched 09/05/75  Sea King lost, crashed into the sea.
04/03/61 Sycamore lost, dropped into the sea. 13/07/77 Wessex lost overboard.
17/09/62 Sycamore damaged on landing 29/08/77 Tracker damaged, nose wheel collapsed.
16/03/61 Gannet lost, ditched 23/05/79 Skyhawk lost,arrestor wire broke.
25/04/63 Gannet lost, ditched 23/05/79 Sea King lost.
02/02/65 Gannet lost, ditched 24/09/79 Skyhawh rolled off flight deck
23/03/65 Gannet lost with death of Observer, hook broke on landing. Nov. 80 2 Skyhawks lost off flight deck in heavy seas.
24/02/66 Gannet lost, crashed over the side    

 

When Melbourne decommissioned 10 of her trackers were sold to a private enterprise, however none have since been employed. They sit decaying in a hanger at West Sale Aerodrome, in Victoria..
